Guide · Cost

What ChatGPT ads really cost.

Two costs. The ad spend, and the work. Here's what's public about both.

The one number OpenAI publishes

For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 per click.[1] That's a starting bid, not a price. Ads Manager may show bid-strength guidance if your bid looks too low to win.[1]

OpenAI doesn't publish average CPMs or CPCs. Treat anyone quoting “the average cost” with caution. Your price depends on your category and your relevance.

How you're billed

You pick an objective, and it sets how you pay:[2]

Billing is postpay. Spend accrues as ads run and is charged to the card saved in Ads Manager.[2]

Why relevance lowers cost

ChatGPT ads run on a relevance-weighted, second-price auction.[1] In plain terms: a more relevant ad can win without the highest bid. Second-price means you generally pay based on what it took to win, not your full max.

So sharp copy and the right context hints aren't just nice. They're how you pay less.

Budget minimums

You set a campaign budget. OpenAI hasn't published a hard minimum we can cite. In the Shopify app, budgets move in $25 steps. Ads Manager allows finer amounts, like $28.[3]

Do the math before you start

Here's a simple way to size a test. These are example numbers, not benchmarks:

Now change the inputs to your store. Your margin, your order value, your conversion rate. The test exists to replace these guesses with real numbers.

The other cost: running it

Retainers and percent-of-spend fees are built for big budgets. They're a bad fit for a small store testing a new channel.
