Guide · The basicsHow ChatGPT ads actually work.
No keywords. No search results page. An ad under an answer. Here's the mechanics in plain English.
The short version
Someone asks ChatGPT a question. ChatGPT answers. If an ad fits the conversation, it appears below the answer, labeled and separate.[1] You pay when it's seen or clicked.
Where ads appear
Each ad has six parts: advertiser name, favicon, headline, copy, an image and a landing page.[1] OpenAI says ads stay “clearly separate from ChatGPT's answers.”[2] Ads don't change what ChatGPT says. They sit beside it.
Who sees them
Not everyone. Ads don't show on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, or to accounts identified as under 18.[1] OpenAI also keeps ads away from sensitive conversations under its ads policies.[1]
How an ad gets picked
This is the big shift from Google. There's no keyword list to buy. Instead, the system weighs:[1]
- the context and intent of the current conversation
- your landing page, headline and copy
- context hints you write at the ad group level: topics, conversations or keywords where you're relevant
- select signals from the user's wider ChatGPT use, if they've turned on ads personalization
Context hints guide matching. They don't guarantee placement.[1] Then a relevance-weighted, second-price auction picks among eligible ads.[1] Relevance counts, not just the size of your bid.
How you buy
A campaign has an objective, a budget, dates and target countries. Platforms and custom audiences are optional.[3] You pick one of three objectives:[3]
- Views (CPM). Pay per 1,000 impressions. Built for reach.
- Clicks (CPC). Pay per valid click. Built for traffic.
- Conversions. The system optimizes toward an event like a purchase. You're still billed per click or per impression, never per conversion.
CPC bidding arrived in May 2026. Before that, the pilot was impressions only.[2]
Who can buy
Two doors. Big brands go through partners such as Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP. Everyone else can use the beta self-serve Ads Manager, which OpenAI is opening up gradually.[2] Shopify stores in the US can also connect through the official Shopify app.[4]
How results are measured
Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, average CPC, average CPM and conversions.[1] Conversions come in through the OpenAI Pixel, the Conversions API or both. A click reference, oppref, rides on your landing URL to tie a sale back to a click.[5]
One quirk worth knowing: spend data can lag 7–8 hours. A zero doesn't always mean nothing was charged.[1]
What this means for a small store
The rules reward relevance and useful copy, not just budget. That's good news for a focused store with a clear product.
But it's new. There are few proven playbooks yet. The smart move is a capped test with clean tracking and a clear verdict, before real money goes in.

Not exact-match keywords. Advertisers write context hints describing relevant topics and conversations. They guide matching but don't guarantee delivery.
