ChatGPT ads for Shopify. Worth a test?

Shoppers ask ChatGPT what to buy. Shopify stores can now show up under the answer. Here's how it works, and how to find out if it pays.

Can a Shopify store advertise on ChatGPT?

Yes. OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026, built for “companies of all sizes, from SMBs and startups to global brands.”[1] Access is rolling out gradually, so not every account gets in on day one.

For Shopify, there's an official route. The ChatGPT Ads app for Shopify connects your store to Ads Manager. OpenAI says it's available to all Shopify customers in the US, with more countries to follow.[2]

What the Shopify app does

Per OpenAI's setup guide, the app:[2]

Some controls live only in Ads Manager. One example from OpenAI: in Ads Manager you can set a $28 budget, while the Shopify app uses $25 steps.[2]

Where the ads show up

Ads appear below ChatGPT's response, clearly separate from the answer. Each one carries your store name, favicon, a headline, short copy, an image and a landing page.[3]

Not everyone sees them. OpenAI doesn't show ads on Plus, Pro or Business plans, or to users identified as under 18.[3]

How ChatGPT picks your ad

There are no exact-match keywords. You give context hints: the topics and conversations where your products fit. The system weighs those against the conversation, your copy and your landing page.[3]

So the work shifts. Less keyword bidding. More thinking about the questions your buyers actually ask.

Three things that matter for a store

1. Write for usefulness

OpenAI's own guidance: clear, specific, benefit-focused copy, with several distinct variations per product.[4] “Shop now” won't cut it. Say who it's for and why it helps.

2. Get tracking right first

Conversions are measured through the OpenAI Pixel and Conversions API. A click reference called oppref is added to your landing URL.[5] If a redirect or app strips it, you lose attribution. Check before you spend.

3. Cap the spend

Billing is per impression or per valid click, never per sale. It's charged after delivery to the card on file.[6] Set a ceiling before launch, and treat month one as a test, not a channel.

Should your store try it?

It fits best if you sell products people research before buying: gifts, gear, skincare, home, pets. That's the kind of question people bring to ChatGPT.

It fits worse if you sell low-price impulse buys, or you can't ship nationwide yet.

Either way, the honest answer is the same: nobody knows for your store until you test it. That's the whole idea behind Nibble Ads.
