Guide · Budget and billing

ChatGPT ads minimum budget, and how billing works.

Short answer: $25 a day for a US ad account billed in dollars. Below is what that means for your card, with each rule linked to OpenAI's own help center.

What is the minimum budget for ChatGPT ads?

$25 a day for an ad account billed in US dollars.[1][2] The minimum depends on the account's billing currency. For example, it's 25 CAD, 15 GBP or 15 EUR.[1]

We couldn't find a published minimum for campaign-total budgets in OpenAI's help center, so treat any number you hear for that as unconfirmed.

Is a $25 daily budget a hard daily cap?

No. A daily budget is an average over a seven-day period. On a single day a campaign can spend up to twice the daily budget, but over seven days it won't spend more than seven times it.[1][2] The budget week runs Sunday to Saturday in your ad account's time zone.[1]

So a $25 daily budget can spend up to $50 on one day and up to $175 in a week.

Should I use a daily budget or a campaign-total budget?

A campaign-total budget sets the most you'll spend over the whole campaign. OpenAI calls it "the stricter control for total spend."[1] A daily budget is easier to watch, and OpenAI suggests new advertisers start with one.[1]

One catch: you can switch a campaign-total budget to a daily budget, but you can't switch it back.[3]

When does OpenAI charge my card?

Billing is postpay. Spend builds up as ads run. On a self-serve card-billed account, your card is charged each time the account reaches its payment threshold, and any balance left is charged at the end of the month.[3]

Ads can't run until billing is set up in Ads Manager.[3]

Can I set an account-wide spending limit?

Not on a self-serve, card-billed account. The account-wide daily spending limit is only for eligible accounts on postpaid invoice terms.[3] On a card-billed account, your campaign budgets are your controls.

Do I pay per click, per view or per sale?

Per click or per 1,000 impressions. Never per sale.[1]

For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3–$5 per click.[4]

What happens to spend when I pause a campaign?

Ads can keep showing for up to 24 hours after a pause, and that spend is billable.[3] Spend in Ads Manager can also lag 7–8 hours, so a zero doesn't mean nothing has been spent.[4]

Can I get a refund if the ads don't sell?

Generally no. OpenAI says valid spend that has already been delivered is generally not refundable, and getting fewer sales than you expected doesn't change that on its own.[3] That's the case for testing small before you scale.

What does a 30-day test cost at the minimum?

Plan on about $750 in ad spend: $25 a day for 30 days. That's our arithmetic from OpenAI's US minimum, not a quote. Within each week, daily spend can run above or below $25.[2]

At a $4 click, $750 buys roughly 187 clicks. That's an example, not a benchmark. OpenAI says there are no performance benchmarks yet across advertisers or industries,[5] so nobody can tell you in advance how many of those clicks will buy. A capped test is how you find out for your store.
