How to test ChatGPT ads without betting the store.

Short answer: run one capped, tracked test for about 30 days, judge it on sales against spend, then decide. Here's how, with OpenAI's rules linked.

Is advertising on ChatGPT worth it for a small business?

Nobody can tell you in advance, and that includes OpenAI. Its own FAQ says ChatGPT Ads "does not yet have performance benchmarks across advertisers, industries, or campaign types," and that results depend on your objective, creative, landing page and relevance.[1]

Our view: it's worth a small, capped test if your customers research before they buy and you can track sales. It isn't worth a big budget on faith.

Where do the ads show, and who sees them?

Ads show below ChatGPT's answers, not inside them. Each one has your name, logo, headline, description, image and a link to your site.[2]

OpenAI doesn't show ads to users on Plus, Pro or any Business plan, or to accounts identified as under 18.[2]

What do I need before I start?

How do I set up a ChatGPT ads test?

  1. Pick what to test. A few products with healthy margins that people ask about before they buy.
  2. Write down your stop number first. The cost per sale where the test stops making sense for your margins.
  3. Check tracking. Make sure a purchase actually shows up as a conversion before you spend.
  4. Choose the objective carefully. Views, Clicks or Conversions. You can't change it once the campaign exists.[8]
  5. Set location. To run only in the US, include the United States explicitly. Excluding other countries isn't enough.[8] Campaigns built from a product feed can only target whole countries.[8]
  6. Set the budget. The US minimum is $25 a day.[8] Your first campaign may not show start and end dates until after you publish it, so don't publish early just to reach those settings.[8]
  7. Write several ad groups. OpenAI suggests multiple ad groups to test different themes.[8] Each has context hints describing the conversations where your products fit. Hints guide matching but aren't exact keywords and don't guarantee placement.[2]
  8. Wait for review. Ads must pass review before they serve.[1]
  9. Check weekly, and cut losers. Then call it at the end.

How long should a ChatGPT ads test run?

OpenAI doesn't set a number. It says to give campaigns enough time to gain traction and gather meaningful data.[8] We use 30 days from when ads start running. That's long enough for a few weekly rounds of changes and short enough to keep the bill small.

How do I know if it worked?

Judge it on sales against spend, not clicks. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, click-through rate, average CPC and CPM, and conversions.[2] Ads Manager, Shopify and your analytics may show different totals, and OpenAI says a difference doesn't necessarily mean an error.[6]

At the end, one of three calls:

Who can run ChatGPT ads for me?

Anyone you invite into your own ad account. OpenAI's setup guide has one person create the advertiser account, then invite others under Settings → Users as Admin, Member or Viewer.[4] Someone who manages several advertisers creates a separate account for each one.[4] So your account, card and campaign history stay yours.

That's how we work: you stay Admin and invite us as a Member. We tested this invite flow on our own ad account on October 19, 2026.

What does a test cost?

At the $25-a-day US minimum, plan on about $750 in ad spend for 30 days. That's our arithmetic, not a quote. See ChatGPT ads minimum budget and billing for how charges work.
